Inspiring days out

I am extremely lucky to work in the creative industries and have had a couple of days feeding my own creativity. On Tuesday I went with a small group of volunteers from Whitby Museum to visit White Rose Candle Workshop, Wensley, near Leyburn. I love tools, processes and techniques and other peoples workshops so this was a real treat. Mick and Jen made us very welcome and it was great to hear Mick talk about the science of candles and how he works to make sure the candles they produce don’t smoke excessively or dribble wax.

Today I attended a class with printmaker Dawn Brooks in Scarborough. I am taking a short 8 week course with her experimenting with a variety of print making techniques. I have never really done any print making before. Today we were introduced to this amazing press at Crescent Arts in Scarborough and were able to print from the Lino cuts we made last week.

20120222-213347.jpg I work quite slowly but here you can see that the group managed to produce quite a large volume of work in the two hour session. Next week we are doing transfer printing. It is exciting trying out these different techniques and I can already see ways of using Lino printing with my enamels – always good to try something new, get out of my comfort zone (even get a bit messy)!

The big kiln is on

At last I am able to use my big kiln again, the controller is fixed up and everything is working perfectly. There are a few jobs left to do to finish off my new studio but most of the equipment is back in place including my big new dehydrator, ready for classes starting in the Spring.

Today I have been experimenting with the new PMC sterling silver clay. I bought some just before Christmas but it needs a two stage firing so I have been waiting until the studio was done and I could use the big kiln again. It seem to have a longer working time than the art clay silver I usually use and it also takes longer to dry. I intended to make straightforward test samples but when it came down to it I couldn’t resist making ‘jewellery’ instead. I have worked thinner than I would usually and the open style ring is something I would normally do using sterling silver and traditional jewellery making techniques. It will be interesting to test its strength when it comes out of the kiln.

I love trying out new materials and new techniques, it is an important part of my personal development and definitely helps with my teaching.

Studio stuff

I have spent a bit of time today sorting things into cupboards in my new studio. It is going to take me a few days to unpack all the boxes of tools and find new homes for things and hopefully everything will have its place. Some things can’t go back until it has all be painted but I will at least be able to work within a few days. I am keen to get the torch set up and get on with some lamp work beads.

My hearth and lamp work area are right down the far end with my new ventilation. Obviously the radio will have to find a proper home as at the moment it is perched on top of the kiln, fixing the two big kiln controllers is one of the jobs on the list, hopefully for tomorrow.

The electrician still has a couple of small jobs to do, including installing the outside light (no street lights here) and the ladder is his. The fire is lit and it seems really cosy with all the new insulation even though it is now heating a much bigger space. It does seem a huge space but I haven’t got the tables and chairs in yet. I am loving the space and can’t wait to get everything finished and sorted out.

Exciting new class schedule

I am adding new classes to my schedule and have just updated the website with dates and booking details. It is going to be an exciting year with my new studio, lots of space, lots of new ideas and some guest tutors! There will also be an exhibition by some members of the Guild of Enamellers in Whitby this summer so plenty of enamelling classes scheduled to coincide with that. You need to be a member of the Guild to be eligible to apply for the exhibition and it is worth joining even if you are a beginner as there are also lots of regional events going on.

Ryedale Building Services

Over the last few weeks my studio has been completely rebuilt. I used a small business called Ryedale Building Services and am absolutely delighted with the results.

I began by inviting Chris to look at the planned work. He took plenty of notes and asked a lot of questions before making very helpful suggestions. He let me have a very detailed quotation a few days later and throughout the whole project he has been great at keeping me completely up to date and informed. As usual in a project like this I made a few alterations and additions as I went along and Chris gave me detailed costs each time, so that I was always fully aware of the implications of even quite small additions.

Most important for me I think is that the standard of work is very high and Chris pays a great deal of attention to detail. I love the result. I now have a beautiful spacious studio, insulated, ventilated and with absolutely loads of work surfaces and storage. It really exceeds my expectations and dreams and I would be happy to recommend Ryedale Building Services and to use them again.

Thank you Chris for all the care and skill that went into my project.

The electrician has still to finish the final fix and check all the electrics and I have a decorator booked for late February. I also have a lot of stuff to sort out including the stack in the middle of the room, but here are the photographs as it looks today.

Pins and fasteners

I have been looking at some work I made a few years ago, this kind of a review is useful and at this time of year and I like to plan new projects for the Spring.

This is a brooch I made about 6 years ago, exploring the use of line by making a long narrow strip of silver, texturing and forming it. One of the aims was to make sure that the ends of the brooch pin were contained, not sticking out past the surface so nice and safe to wear. I will be teaching traditional silver jewellery making this year, please get in contact if this is something you are interested in learning.

Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th March 2012, Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April 2012

This is a four day course following the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver)
Seven projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the seven projects and the use of tools and equipment. The projects are assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made to the Art Clay UK Guild. If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to ‘remake’ them at additional cost to the student.

Master Classes

Plique a jour enamel in art clay silver with Lynne Glazzard £300
Saturday 28th July and Sunday 29th July 2012, a two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make silver earrings, learning the basic principles of design for plique a jour enamel and firing and finishing them ready for the second day. On day two you will learn to prepare the enamel and to apply it, firing and gradually building up the cells until they are filled. You will then give the pieces a final finish and add the findings ready to wear. The course includes small amounts of three enamel colours, enough to complete the project.

Cloisonne enamel on art clay silver with Lynne Glazzard £280
Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October 2012, a two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make a silver pendant, learning about design for enamel.
On the second day you will prepare and apply wire patterns followed by thin layers of enamel, firing each layer in turn. You will then learn methods for finishing the piece to a high standard. The course includes small amounts of enamel, enough to complete the project.

Glass and art clay silver combination beads with Lynne Glazzard £280
Thursday 8th and Friday 9th November 2012 – two day workshop. On the first day you will learn to apply a variety of art clay silver products to the surface of glass beads before firing and annealing them in the kiln. On day two you will make some art clay silver beads to complement the glass beads before finishing them all to a high standard. Some glass beads are included in the course fee but not the art clay silver. A detailed materials list will be supplied in advance but you will need approximately 20g Art Clay 650; 10g Syringe type, Art Clay Silver Overlay paste

Building work begins

The building work has started in my studio. The plan is to create a beautiful new teaching space from what was two separate rooms and it will allow me to develop my ideas for new classes and also, very excitingly, to invite other teachers to run special classes here.

This is how it looked first thing this morning. The first week will be really messy as Chris dismantles the dividing wall but it is great to see my ideas progressing.

Starting to clear out

I have started the big clear out ready for the builder to begin work in my studio tomorrow.

This corner of the room has always been used to stack ‘stuff’ out of the way and was hidden behind a sheet. The plan is that this corner will house the equipment for lamp working glass and also my hearth for soldering and torch work. I am really excited about the reorganisation as it will really open up the space and bring what were wasted areas into use.

There is still quite a lot to move but the clear out is well underway. Today a friend has collected boxes of dark room equipment that I haven’t used for around 20 years. Her partner will now be able to set up his own darkroom and it is great that it will be used and enjoyed again. I have also sorted out a lot of real junk (why did we keep this stuff for so long?) A trip to the tip is planned for later in the week.
